Are you a one-book-at-a-time person?

My kindle currently has two books open on it and another one stands half read on my bedside table. And that is quite strange. Strange, because usually I am a one-book-at-a-time person. If I like a book I immerse myself in it, I lose myself in it, I think about it even when I’m not reading it. If I don’t like it much I want to finish with it fast so I can go on to another one.

(Of course the sensible thing to do is to just leave that bad book and move on but that’s not quite me. An unfinished book preys on my mind. It nags me demanding closure, asking for its ‘The End’. But more on that later.)

The point I’m trying to make is that I like to read one book at a time. It might have something to do with the fact that I mostly read fiction. Perhaps non-fiction readers can read more than one – absorbing and internalising and maybe even practising them – bit by bit while they read another one on the side.

I have a friend who simultaneously reads one book on fiction and another non-fiction. The latter keeps him company during the day – while he’s at breakfast or while travelling to and from work – and the former is his bed-time leisure read.

That works for him. It is perhaps the sign of a sane, balanced person.

However, that’s exactly what I am not — sane and balanced — when I get a good book . A good book erodes my sense of balance. A great book, does away with it completely. To me fiction most definitely needs to be read at one go; in one sitting if life permits. How else do you enter a world or a life, make it your own and love and laugh with the people in the book?

How can you jump from the company of three men in a boat on River Thames in London to Karan Johar’s Bollywood – those being my two current reads.

Nope – I have to put one of them on hold. I am most certainly a one-book-at-a-time person and happy being so.

Do you like to have more than one book on your bedside table?

  1. I can actually read three books at a time. I’ve recently taken quite a fancy to non fiction and most of the books I read in 2016 were non fiction so that model worked very well. I think I like the variety the books offer while at the same time the notion that I love to read anything I can. Such an interesting topic really!

  2. I, too, am a one-book-at-a-time person. I enter into the world of the story and begin feeling and relating to each of the characters and their happiness and their pain, so much so, that even when I keep the book away to complete chores, I keep thinking and wondering what turn will their life take next! Recently I finished reading The Book Thief. So engrossed was I in the world of Liesel Memminger, I forgot my own. And, at the end, on reading the tragedy that struck the poor little girl, I wept and wept. Hubby and nephew asked me again and again what the matter was, why was I crying so much! 😛
And that’s why I like reading only one book at a time.

    1. Dito ditto ditto – you’re me all over. If it’s a really good book I don’t want to snap out of it. The Book Thief was heart-breaking.

      1. I usually pause at a decent point (not like a cliffhanger or something). I usually mix genres and non-fiction together. I find it difficult to put down thrillers though. If I am reading a 800 page tome, I read some smaller books with it.

  3. I prefer reading one non-fiction and one fiction book. But this year I happen to have three non-fiction books open on the Kindle. I’ve kept one on standby, and hope to finish the other two before the month ends!

I can’t manage reading only non-fiction books, and hence I’m supplementing both of them by reading HP4 ❤

  4. Mmmm.. I read multiple books at a time. It depends on my mood. I can read a book of short stories or non-fiction with a Full fledged novel. The short stories are quick reads which I can do anytime in between the various chores. Its like a short break. I do not read multiple novels at the same time as I have to be in their book world.

  5. I’m also mostly a one-book-at-a-time person. But, I can also leave a bad book mid-way and move on to the next, although one part of my mind will feel guilty about doing that. I used to be a fiction only person but I read a couple of non-fiction recently and loved them. So, maybe I should try more in that genre. Having said this, my reading levels are dismally low, so actually feel like a fraud commenting here.

    1. You know Uma till my kids were about 5, I almost gave up reading. And look how I’ve come back. If reading was ever a hobby, or for that matter whatever hobby you had, it might just come back when you get some respite as R grows up. So hang in there.

  6. I am a one book person but if I don’t like a book, I ditch it right away!! Life’s too short to read crappy books 🙂 I like to absorb the book and once I am done, I like to reflect back and revisit the story in my mind before picking up another.

    1. Absolutely – life really is too short for bad books. That’s my takeaway from your comment.

    1. I knew it. I said already the sane and balanced people are able to handle more than one at a time. No surprises there.

  7. Long ago when books were scarce and libraries lent just one or max two books, I used to read one book at a time. Also I used to mostly read fiction then and that meant completing one before starting another. Of late with Kindle and availability of many books (my son and DIL are avid book buyers and readers too!) I read multiple books at a time. It makes for a smorgasbord of reading. Also, I have almost stopped reading fiction and if I do read, it is mostly children’s or young adult fiction. There I finish quickly and continue with my other reading.

    1. I think my habit might come from those times when we had only one book at time available to us. And I love children’s books too as I do YA. Kids these days have access to such fantastic books, they have no clue how fortunate they are.

  8. Oh, I am a one-book-at-a-time person. Recently, I have tried reading 2-3 books at a time, but it doesn’t work for me. If I like a book, I read that book (without lifting any other book). If I don’t like the book, I leave it unfinished (unless it’s a review copy. In this case, I just have to finish it and write the review). However, I can pull off at times if book 2 is a light/easy read or anthology. But then, I stick to the book that’s more interesting. 🙂

    1. That’s a good idea – to have one major book and another bit read. That is, if you really want to read more than one book at a time.

  9. I go from being a serial bookagamist to being an outright cheater/two-timer. During certain periods, if I find there are too many unread books on my shelf, in a desperate need to finish them all, I assign an amount of time in a day to each, and I read all of them. But I’ve never read more than three at a time, I’m sure.

    1. It’s kind of distracting to read multiple books and I think I wouldn’t be able to enjoy any of them. But I may sometimes leave a bad book midway and then come back to it.

  10. I was a one-book kind of person but of late have turned into a 2 book kind. I have a spiritual book for early mornings and late nights, need total concentration to read this kind. The fiction is for the day, BTW I read most books in one sitting as I find it difficult to come out of any story midway 🤓 It is a pleasure to visit your blog and to share my thoughts with you. Have a great day.

    1. Thanks Sulekha. Spiritual books is one category I’ve yet to explore. I think those are the books that need to be read at leisure.

Reading has taken a back seat, but I’m going to resume soon. And I am a one-book-at-a-time person, just like you.

    Cheers

  12. I have read multiple books at various points of time (physical books-during travel, Kindle books-before sleeping, PDF books-during the day, when on Laptop {I hate this absolutely and have stopped reading PDFs altogether}). I have done that to make the most of the available time. But I am a one book at a time person. Like you mentioned, I think about the story/characters even when I am not reading.

  13. I am exactly like you. One book at a time. Even if it’s a bad book, I want to finish it and move on. But recently, I picked up a good book and it needs absorbing concepts and all that good stuff. So, to lighten up myself, I picked up a fiction and now, I am on fiction 😉 So yes, two books are open right now on Kindle but as I head to bed, I get to the lighter and the wonderful ‘Predictably Irrational’ 😉

  14. I do try to read one book at a time, but at times, it feels difficult. One book might be a very tedious read and not engaging enough, so I skip to another. I’m currently reading just the one book, but one is always on standby, just in case. 😉

  15. I could have written this post. Well almost (it’s a feeling I get every time I read a post from your parenting/ book blog). But in my case, as I am highly inclined towards non-fiction, I am currently reading 3 non-fiction books from 3 different genres, loving all three and quite liking this new experience.
It’s a new way of reading for me, but in the long run, I am going to stick to reading like I always do. One book at a time and savouring it to the fullest.
