Reading plan for 2019

Featured post on IndiBlogger, the biggest community of Indian Bloggers

Hola people and welcome to this brand new year. Reading-wise 2018 was a good year for me. I got through 36 books and am pretty happy with that.

Normally I plan my reading meticulously but the end of 2018 was so chaotic on the home front that I was caught off guard without a reading plan. The thing to do then was to get my act together fast.

Very quickly then, here are the Challenges I’m taking up.

#ReadMyOwnDamnBooks Challenge

To be honest this was already a part of the plan formulating in my head for a long time even though I did not consciously give it voice. Taking a cue from that (the voice in my head) the first Challenge I pledge myself to this year, is the #ReadMyOwnDamnBooks Challenge. I desperately need to, and I will, focus on reading the books I already have, at least one, maybe two, of the three I hope to read each month. I really have just too many of them and it’s an absolute shame to have them all sitting there staring at me while I pretend to ignore them and continue on a buying spree.

Of course part of me is already protesting:
There are new books coming out everyday and they’re so interesting and everyone talks about them all the time, and social media is buzzing with them; the covers are so enticing and the blurbs are intriguing and they’re so inexpensive on the kindle…

But Shushhh! I tell that part of me, as I renew my pledge to make a dent in the TBR pile at home. That’s going to be the mainstay of my reading this year.

The Goodreads Challenge

Then there’s the Goodreads Challenge which I’ve faithfully taken up and completed for the past three years. I love the freedom it offers: one can set his/her own target, read any kind of book and also that one can revise it at any point in time. Though if one does revise it, it kind of defeats the whole purpose of the challenge. But hey! To each his own.

That said, it works well for me because it gives me a push without making me feel the pressure. That sounds oxymoromish but it works perfectly. Also, more importantly, it does not distract me from my primary goal of reading the books I already have. In fact it is right in line with it.

The Write Tribe Challenge

Lastly there’s the Write Tribe Reading Challenge that sounds deliciously interesting while seeming easy to take up. Since I’m already pledging to read 36 books, this one seems doable too and so I look forward to reaching the level of a ‘bookworm’ at WT. I’m hoping the one ‘luxury book’ I allow myself each month shall go towards this Challenge.

And now I feel guilty for implying that books I already have are ‘non-luxury’ which sounds like they’re unloved and that is not the case at all – they’re all books I’ve bought or have been been gifted, very lovingly. I still need to fit titles into the WT categories and I shall get to it soon enough. I shall certainly be sharing it all here with you guys and looking for recommendations too.

That’s it from me. I’d love to hear from you. What challenges are you taking up? Do you too have a pile of books waiting to be read?

  1. I read some 42-43 books last year, but reading-wise it was not a very good year. I left several books {unanimously loved books. Need to write a post} unfinished.

Reading my own damn book challenge is something I decided to do. I have stopped buying new books, and realize that it’s not that difficult. I am reading what I already have. I’ll buy new books in April-May {yes, calculated}. Plus, no review copies unless they are on my TBR. I want to read my own books, leave them unfinished if don’t enjoy.

    1. That’s a good plan. And I’d love to read your post on well-loved books you couldn’t finish. The ‘why’ would be interesting. I have a bunch of mine too.

  2. I actually think of a number every year and try to achieve it by tracking it on Goodreads. And I only buy one book at a time so that at the end of each one, I can decide what I’m in the mood for and buy accordingly. of course, the temptation is always there and with the beautiful covers as you rightly mentioned it becomes unbearable. Keep reading, Tulika, numbers will follow 🙂

    1. That’s the best way to read Naba. My stash overflows each time I go to a Books By Weight Sale or I borrow from friends. We exchange 4 to 5 books at a go. And then I fall behind.

  3. Three reading challenges! You are really up for some big time reading. I did outread myself in last year’s Goodreads Challenge but that was quite easy since I had given myself a very easy target – 12 books. Even though I didn’t read a book a month, I read more than I’d planned. But this year I didn’t sign on to any challenge because I have other challenges I have to meet! Good luck with this read your own book challenge. There are many books in my own shelf that can qualify for this challenge. Possibly, will give myself this challenge 😉

  4. Nice! I’m doing 6 challenges – the Goodreads one and the WT one but also two focussed on Aussie authors, Erin’s prompt-based/points based challenge and Corinne’s Outdo yourself challenge. Books overlap but the point is to try and get through most of the books already on my shelves — it does not mean I won’t fall prey to buying some of the new releases! 😀

  5. I remember the ‘Read your own books’ challenge from one of your earlier posts. My 2018 went away in a hazy and lost state. I read books but I don’t remember which ones and how many. For 2019, I have again set up a target of 12 books for the Goodreads challenge. Yes, I know it is too less for someone who claims to be a reader. The other day I stacked up all the books I have bought in the last months of 2018 but not read and they came out to be 12 in number. All of them are for kids. I tell myself I must also read books meant for grown-ups. My thought is same as yours ‘So many books to read, so little time.’ A request to you – Please come around often. It always feels good to share thoughts with you 🙂

    1. I will Anamika. It’s just that I’ve barely been blogging – about once a month. I’m hoping 2019 will see me around more often. Oh and don’t compare your target with anyone else’s. Most of my friends are at 50-100 books. But I know given my constraints around 30 is a good bet, so that’s what it has to be. As for children’s books – that’s fine too. There are such ingenuous books for kids that’s it’s okay to fall for them, just like YA is one of my favourite genres despite being far far away from being a YA :-).

  6. This is the first time I entered the Goodreads challenge and have set myself a moderate target. If I exceed, good, but why push myself and make it a chore instead of a pleasure, right? Only yesterday I bought some books by the kilo.

    1. I agree with you on reading being a pleasure, but in the crowd of things to do I like it when Goodreads reminds me that I’m behind schedule.

  8. Last year even I could manage only 36 books but just like you am happy. This year I have taken up 3 challenges and it looks promising. Lets see, how I end up in the end of the year. Happy reading to you Tulika.

  9. Since reading is such an integral part of my core word of the year I can completely relate to this one. I love the first of your challenges the most 😀 ‘Read my Own damn books’ is such a cool hashtag, by the way. 😉

It’s great that the one challenge I see all over SM is the reading challenge and it gives me hope that reading is alive and well. I’ve decided to do the GoodReads one too this year and am aiming at a book a week but kept it at 50, to budget for travel/sickness etc. Finished one book and am on track and am so childishly delighted.

Totally hear you on the not buying any more books. I wound up buying so many (e-books too!) that I am curbing my enthusiasm and reserving the money for later this year when I can binge buy 😉 Good luck and you will ace all the challenges. I am certain of this 🙂

  10. This year too I have imposed a no-book-buying pact on myself ( I did end of buying a few last year) and already set the Bday wishlist!! I hope to find many contributers to this list 😉

So yeah reading what I have on my bookshelves and begging/borrwing and stealing the rest is the plan!! Also signing up for free kindle / audible kind of deals that I saw in my inbox a while back – will explore them too!

All the best with your reading goals Tules – looking forward to seeing exciting reviews in this year!

    1. Great Shalini. As a sustained reader we do need to cut down on book-buying. That’s something I’ve come to believe in. Good luck with your reading. Looking forward to a great year.

  11. What a fun hastag! I only do the Goodreads one and that works for me. I am gunning for 24 this year. My TBR keeps growing and I am a kindle reader so atleast I don’t pile books but yes – I keep adding to kindle. So yes, I need to read my own damn books. 🙂

  12. I just put up my reading goals for 2019 a few days back, and while I have combined book blogging goals in there, in the reading area – reading my own books is very high on my priority list this year, among other things. Because I recently piled them all up to count, and the number made me really anxious. So let’s hope both of us make a serious dent in our respective physical TBRs this year.

  13. I was only doing the Goodreads challenge until now, but now I want to be a part of this #ReadMyOwnDamnBooks challenge as well. With more than 50 unread books on my shelf, I better get this one right 🙂

P.S: Books I’ve already ordered and will soon be delivered does count as my own damn book right? 😀

  14. Wish you luck with your challenges.. Last year was pretty bad for me reading wise and blogging wise too. But this year, I want to go back to being myself. Currently just signed up for 24 books.

    1. Thanks Lata. Hope 2019 turns out better, reading wise. We have to remember that life has to go on too so 24 books is a decent target.

  15. I am also working towards reading my own books this year. The stack is piling, both hard and soft copies. Hopefully, I will be able to participate in atleast one interesting book challenge this year. Haven’t done that in a while now😊

  16. I failed miserably last year but am hoping to catch up on my reading this year. #ReadMyOwnDamnBooks is very high on my agenda, but I cant help buying new Kindle books and the the pile of my unread physical books is growing bigger and bigger. All the very best for your reading goals, Tulika. Cheers ♥

  17. I so love that read my own books challenge. I dont have too many of them thank God. But this year I am going to stick to my kindle to purchase books. With a transferable job, space is becoming a big constaraint for me. All the best with your challenge and may you complete all that you have in your own shelf first 🙂
